The real benefits

Strategic planning that changes how leading feels.

The work won’t disappear – but in one day you stop stiop spinning your wheels, and step forward with clarity and confidence. We strip strategy back to six simple questions, make the decisions in the room and you leave with a one-page plan everyone owns

Momentum.

Walk out with a complete plan – no more “when we get time”, just forward motion.

Clear direction.

See the road ahead and the few choices that matter. One page you can point to.

Real alignment.

Make the decisions together, so there’s one story – not 12 versions. Ownership from the room.

Long-term compass.

A simple north star to test day-to-day decisions against – what to do now, what to park.

How we can help

Busy, not better: The tell-tale symptoms.

When there isn’t a real plan, the organisation gets busier, not better. Urgent work crowds out the important, decisions stall and people feel stretched thin. You see motion everywhere, but little momentum – lots happening, not much that truly moves you forward.

Slide
Firefighting.

Days vanish to urgent tasks while the important work slips week after week. You’re reacting to problems instead of directing progress, and the team starts to feel permanently on the back foot.

Slide
Too many priorities.

You’re trying to do everything at once, so impact becomes a mile wide and an inch deep. People work hard but spread thin, and the exhaustion grows faster than the results.

Slide
Stuck under it all.

It never feels like you can get over the hump – there’s always more, everywhere you turn. There’s no space to think, so you keep pushing harder instead of stepping back to choose what matters.

Slide
Fragmented effort.

Teams pull in different directions because alignment is missing. You get duplicate projects, conflicting initiatives and fuzzy accountability – plenty of activity and meetings, but little coordinated progress.

How it works

A single day. A complete plan. Four simple steps.

We keep the process straightforward so you can move fast. Light prep, a focused day and practical follow-through that turns the plan into everyday action.

1

Book a free consultation

A quick 20-min video chat to confirm what you’re aiming for and whether this workshop is the right fit. No pitch, no pressure.

2

Pre-planning

One or two brief sessions with the leader to lock goals, attendees and any constraints. We’ll share a light pre-read for the team (about an hour) and, if useful, suggest optional reviews (previous plans, organisational strategy, SWOT or PESTLE analyses). Minimal overhead, maximum readiness.

3

One day workshop

We start with a blank page and move fast through our proven agenda (preview a copy here). By day’s end you’ll leave with a one-page Team Alignment Canvas – purpose, values, strategy, goals, roles and critical activities – captured clearly and owned by the team. It’s strong enough to run with immediately – and simple enough for the leader to finesse the final wording after the day.

4

Debrief and momentum

In the days that follow, we debrief, gather feedback and share a simple cadence to keep the plan alive: how to turn it into weekly priorities, check-ins and progress you can see.

Who we are

Meet your facilitators.

We’re Joel Bailey and Sean Craig, co-founders of Impact Society. For more than a decade we’ve run this one-day planning format with boards, executive teams, business units, not-for-profits and government agencies. We’ve refined it over dozens of rooms – fast, honest, practical – and we love the energy that comes when a team lands on one clear plan they all own.

Joel has spent almost 20 years in consulting and over a decade facilitating strategic planning with boards and executive teams. He’s run one-day planning workshops across the corporate, university and not for profit sectors. Connect with Joel on LinkedIn.

Sean is a former GM and CEO, and for many years was head of strategy at a large organisation. He has facilitated strategic planning sessions with boards, executive teams and business units in the corporate and government sectors. Connect with Sean on LinkedIn.

We both facilitate the same proven process. Different backgrounds, same outcome: a complete one-page plan the team believes in and can start executing immediately.

Frequently asked questions.

Is this really one day?

Yes. By day’s end you’ll have a complete draft one-page plan. We intentionally stop short of wordsmithing in the room – that keeps momentum high and leaves space for the leader to polish language and exercise judgement before locking it in.

In-person or virtual?

In-person works best and is our strong recommendation. We can run it virtually when it’s genuinely impractical to meet (e.g. globally distributed teams), using a shared digital board.

Who should attend?

The decision-makers who will own the plan – typically the leadership team. The ideal group size is 6 – 8, and no more than 12.

What prep is required?

A short pre-planning call (or two) with the leader and a light pre-read for participants. We will also advise on optional reviews, such as previous plans, parent organisational strategy and strategic analyses (e.g. SWOT, PESTLE etc.), where they’d help.

What’s the agenda for the day?

We keep it simple and fast. We kick-off with an overview of the workshop and a short warm-up, before diving into the six questions that will shape your one-page plan:

  • Why do we exist? Identify your organisation’s or team’s core purpose
  • How will we succeed? Identify what strategies you will implement to deliver your core purpose and achieve your goals
  • What do we do? Identify key activities the organisation or team must undertake, in alignment with its strategies for success, to deliver on its core purpose
  • Who does what? Define the key roles and responsibilities of team members
  • How will we behave? Identify the core values, which will define your culture and way of working
  • Where are we going? Identify your goals for the medium to long term

We’ve run this agenda dozens of times and it works reliably well. For more information, you can download a copy of the agenda.

What do we leave with?

A complete draft one-page plan captured on the Team Alignment Canvas (purpose, values, strategy, goals, roles). We’ll also run a one-hour debrief to outline next steps for turning it into day-to-day action.

What happens after the workshop?

The leader finalises the wording and socialises the plan as needed. If you’d like extra help beyond the debrief (e.g. drafting support or rollout advice), we can provide it, but it’s entirely optional.

Can we run this ourselves?

Yes. If budget or timing makes a workshop tricky, you can use our Strategic Planning Toolkit to run the same process in-house – step-by-step agenda, facilitation guides and all the templates you need. If you want a light touch, we can also provide ad-hoc coaching by the hour.

I have more questions, how can I get in touch?

We’d love to hear from you!  You can e-mail us here anytime.  We’ll help you with any questions or advice you need on how the workshop might be able to help your organisation or team.
