Authenticity matters more than doing leadership the way it’s always been done

When we enter management, we often feel we have to become what we can see.

We tend to assume that leadership has to look a certain way.

That it needs to be strong, unemotional, rigid and in control – because that’s how it’s so often been role-modelled to us. In our careers. In the media. In films and on TV.

But I think that’s wrong on two counts.

First, a lot of what we’ve seen is simply bad role-modelling.

The people we lead are human. And we’re human. So the idea that we should engage with others in a non-human way – pretending no one ever feels anything – is absurd.

Treating people with high control and low autonomy, showing little tolerance for messiness, and judging them swiftly as either good or bad? That might deliver short-term compliance, but it’s no way to inspire or engage people over the long term.

Second, we’re not bound to follow the herd.

One of the most important things we can bring to any relationship—whether it’s with our partners, friends and families, or with our team – is authenticity.

Because when we show up with honesty, humility and care, we give others permission to do the same.

And that’s where real leadership begins.

Not when we act the part. But when we bring ourselves to it.
